Wannabe Amazing:: Research software

README text for Wannabe Amazing

Wannabe Amazing is a tool for Global Illumination applications.
It allows to visualize and editing scenes coming from six different formats:

  • Kinetix 3D Studio
  • Autocad Draw eXchange Format
  • Multigen Open Flight
  • Virtual Reality Modelling Language
  • Wavefront Object File
  • GRF - Granada File

Once the scene is loaded in our program we can edit the model adding material attributes and other information necesary in the illumination proccess, oriented to its use in ZEUS framework. Therefore a GRF file is generated (see BNF) in text format. Here are some GRF examples.
Thanks to Wannabe Amazing, BRDF information (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) will describe the reflective behavior of a mesh object. Also we can play with reflectance models as isolated with our editor of BRDFs which shows the effect that produces some parameters for each one of the implemented reflection models (Phong, Torrance-Sparrow, HTSG, Poulin-Fournier and many more).

Requirements and Installation

The minimum proved configuration is of a Pentium 120MHz with 32MB, being highly recommendable to have of a superior processor and greater amount of memory.
Wannabe Amazing is implemented in Java and for that reason is platform independent, so could be executed under different operating systems whenever it had installed the Sun's Virtual Maquine (it is only necessary to have installed the runtime). But also, we need the Java3D library.

It's always recommendable to have the last versions of the JVM, that at the moment is:

  • Java3D version 1.3.1 beta 1, available as well at Sun. Here it's necessary to distinguish between the different options:

Wannabe Amazing does not need any special installation. We just need the file wannabe.jar (Java Archive) available in this site.

Download

In order to provide an effective way to distribute to applet and applications, Sun has introduced Jar Archive file format. It allows to insert all the archives associated with an applet in an unique compressed file.
